1. Handling. The 3 Series is one of the best cars to drive without spending huge amounts on a supercar. The steering is sharp, accurate and well weighted, and the car feels agile, grippy and superbly balanced. In short, it’s what all cars should feel like to drive.
2. Ride. Very often a car that handles well is often too firm, but not only is there no body roll when tackling corners, but the ride is considerably more compliant than in previous 3s. That’s some achievement.
3. Economy. BMW has made huge strides in recent years with its EfficientDynamics package of measures to improve fuel economy and reduce emissions (and, as a consequence, save owners money). In the current 3 Series, that means almost all diesel-engined models are returning in excess of 60mpg (the most efficient 320d can actually manage 68.9mpg) and emit CO2 levels placing them in Band C for VED. Not exactly cheap to run, but cheaper than what you’d expect for a premium executive car.
4. Connectivity. BMW’s ConnectedDrive – which uses an SIM card embedded in the car when it was built for its connectivity – is probably the best system of its kind on the market. It will not only offer you services such as real-time traffic information and music streamed directly to the car, but it will put you in pole position for all the technological developments due in the next few years.
5. Great cabin. The BMW’s interiors are among the best you can sit in. If you can afford to upgrade to leather, do so (we really like the red option). The seats are comfortable and space is good for the class. All the switches and buttons are equally high quality, too, with a solid, well-screwed-together feel.
