- Incredible battery life: Battery life has always been the main USP of the Redmi line of smartphones and the Redmi Note 4 is basically a home run in that regard. It has a 4,100mAh battery which basically means that it has twice as large battery than an iPhone 7. Its battery is also significantly larger than an iPhone 7 Plus. But numbers be damned. In day to day usage, the phone consistently lasted by in-excess of 40-hours on a single charge and I really never needed to worry about the battery life or even obsessed about charging the phone.
- Reliable Camera: The biggest upgrade to the Redmi Note 4 is the camera. The 13-megapixel camera takes sharp photos which have colours that are close to real life. The phone also manages to lock focus pretty quickly. Even in low-light it is decent. Now this will not trailblazer a iPhone 7 camera or a Pixel for that matter, but it will come close enough that you'll not be disappointed with the results.
- Performance: To be clear, I tested the model with 4GB RAM and 64GB storage. Internally, this phone has a Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 eight-core processor which could be viewed by many as a downgrade compared to the Snapdragon 650 on the Redmi Note 3. However, that's not the case. The Snapdragon 625 is built on a 14nm manufacturing process as opposed to a 28nm process for the Snapdragon 650. While the 650 is theoretically faster, the Snapdragon 625 has a smaller die thanks to its superior manufacturing process. In turn this means, it consumes less power as it smaller it is also closer to the logic board which reduces latency and makes the SoC more performant. So when you combine more RAM and a slightly better optimised operating system you have a phone which performs better. More than this, the 625 has better thermals which means that it never gets over heated even while being stress-tested. I tested this by playing games like Dead Trigger 2 and ShadowGun and the phone never heated and never showed lags or frame rate drops.
- Looks: While the Redmi Note 3 had a metal construction and was well built, it never could be called an elegant phone. Its design was industrial in nature. The Redmi Note 4 refines the rough edges around the Redmi Note 3. It is slimmer at 8.3mm and weighs almost the same at 165 grams. It has neat chamfers and a contoured 2.5D curved cover glass on top of the screen which just looks neat. On the back too, there are curves on the edges which adds to looks of the phone.
- Great Value: Think about it, this phone is being offered in three SKUs a model with 2GB RAM and 32GB storage, a model with 3GB RAM and 32GB storage and the model I tested with 4GB RAM and 64GB storage. It also adds a micro SD card slot for and dual SIM support with 4G VolTE in tow. All this and all of the above in a package that tops out for less than Rs 15,000. This indeed is great value.
